“Hang Seng’s First Branch in MTR Station (1981)”
In September 1981, Hang Seng embarked on a new venture in retail banking when it opened an extensive network of ‘mini-branches’ in the Mass Transit Railway Corporation’s (MTR) stations. Services included over-the-counter withdrawal and deposit facilities, supplemented by ATMs which remained open outside normal banking hours. Under the franchise agreement with the MTR, 17 bank outlets were in operation by the end of 1981, and a further 10 were added following the opening of the Tsuen Wan extension in 1982. At the end of 2007, Hang Seng was operating outlets in 57 MTR stations.
